Nation Builder is excited to announce that Francois van Niekerk will be at the In Good Company 2016 conference to share his passion for using commercial success to address the needs in our society.
After a corporate career at the Rembrandt Group, Anglo American and Armscor, Van Niekerk founded the Mertech Group in 1980. From a challenging start without capital, the Mertech Group developed over 36 years to an international conglomerate. Van Niekerk co-founded the Atterbury property group and served as chairman of Atterbury Investment Holdings from its inception in 1994 to 2012.
Van Niekerk’s vision of philanthropy is underpinned by his belief in the equitable distribution of actual business ownership and wealth among all stakeholder groups. In this spirit, Van Niekerk established a completely independent community trust, the Mergon Foundation. The Mergon Foundation is rather unique in global philanthropic terms, not only in holding 65% of the founding business, but also in avoiding the legal entrenchment of any founder rights or continuous family control. The 65% shareholding accorded the foundation R90 million in dividends for the 2015/16 fiscal year. Annual dividends are used to benefit some 140 large-scale non-profit organisations that collectively finance 700 projects mainly in South Africa, but also in southern, central and north Africa as well as other countries.
Van Niekerk has authored a book Doing Business with Purpose: beyond success to Significance, and he has received a number of academic-, business- and philanthropy awards including an honorary doctorate from Unisa.
Make sure that you attend the In Good Company 2016 conference to be inspired by this creative and courageous leader as he shares what he has learned about good giving.
The In Good Company 2016 Conference happens on Tuesday 30 August 2016 at the Atterbury Theatre, Lynnwood, Pretoria.
